Fundraising – The Dittons Fair

The Dittons Fair has been the main annual community celebration in Thames and Long Ditton for over 70 years.  The Fair provides the key funding source for all the scouting events that our leaders and assistants plan and execute. This enables fun and challenging activities for the 150 local children that attend the Dittons Scout Group.  We’ve held the Fair on Giggs Hill Green since 1964.  However its history goes back even further, with the first ‘Summer Spree’ held in the grounds of the Group HQ in Claygate Lane during 1956. This is a hugely popular event, with something for everyone and entry is free.

Scouting is a voluntary youth movement, the Group is a registered educational charity, and Leaders give their time freely, having as much fun as the children along the way. The Group has to be financially self-supporting and needs about £8,000 a year merely to stay afloat.  The bulk of our funding comes from our annual and ONLY fundraiser, The Dittons Fair, held on Giggs Hill Green at the beginning of May each year.

Rather than compete with other scout groups for jumble, tree and plant sales, this event brings our group and the local community together for the largest fair in the area of its kind. Approaching its 60th year The Dittons Fair is well known for its signature Pig Racing, the ever ‘Dotty’ Dog Show and a number of traditional side shows which we own and run at pocket money prices; crazy golf, pop guns, coconut shy and many many more. Extra thrills from bouncing bungees and slides, whirling tea cups and swings, a craft fair village and arena events to entertain throughout the afternoon.

All against the backdrop of a cricket match…..
