Due to Government restrictions, members of the Thames Ditton Scout Groups and Girl Guide Groups were unable to participate in their annual Remembrance Day parade and service on Giggs Hill Green this year. To make up for their absence, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders of The Dittons Scout Group created their own poppies from card, cellophane, felt, wood, some knitted, some knotted but all handcrafted. Jackie Bourne and Tony Butcher, Scout Leaders of the Wednesday Troop, constructed a cascading garland with the poppies and attached it to the War Memorial in readiness for Remembrance Sunday.
On 5th November, the Scout Association imposed another cessation of face to face meetings for all Scout Groups. As a consequence, the two Beaver Colonies had to revert to online Zoom meetings. Utilising a suggestion from the 1st Virtual Scout Group on Facebook, the Beavers were set a challenge of creating a poppy from household materials and photographing the results of their endeavours.
